Ten Things to Do in Cozumel

City in Mexico

Although Mexico boasts many famous cities and regions, in the State of Quintana Roo the island of Cozumel is one of its most enchanting destinations.  A vacationer’s paradise, the island is famous for its many adventurous or unforgettable things to do.  The following ten activities will delight the senses and make you fall head over heels for Cozumel’s extraordinary charms.

1. Scuba Dive in Cozumel

This is absolutely the number one thing to do in Cozumel. Among the best places to scuba dive in the western hemisphere, Cozumel is internationally renowned for its scuba diving.  From drift dives to night dives, certified scuba divers has over 20 dive sites to choose from. You will love the reefs and the wide array of ocean life to view and explore. For information on specific dive sites, click here.

2. Visit the Mayan Ruins

Cozumel has its share of archaeological ruins to explore.  From El Caracol, an ancient Mayan lighthouse, to the more extensive site of San Gervasio, history buffs will find a few marvels to make their trek worthwhile.  San Gervasio is a small temple dedicated to Ixchel, the goddess of fertility and the moon. You can see her depicted throughout the island of Cozumel. Among this temple as well as other buildings, there is an entrance gate and road built by the Mayans that is still standing.

3. Snorkel

Nearly as popular as scuba diving, snorkeling is a favorite activity on Cozumel.  An abundance of coral and clear water makes viewing the underwater world a spectacular pastime. The most popular snorkeling tour takes you to 4 locations. Information on this particular tour can be found here.

4. Shop San Miguel

Cozumel’s downtown, San Miguel, is a central point for tour information, restaurants, and souvenir shops. All you need to know can be found in this area: tours,  unique artisanal crafts, and, of course, the famous Cozumel sign. Try dining at Casa Denis or the exotic Casa Mission for a spectacular meal.

5. Learn How to Make Chocolate

Chocolate, of course, is integral to the historic cuisine of pre-Columbian Mexico.  Learn about the fascinating history of cocoa, enjoy tasting their chocolates and getting to make some yourself at Chocolates Kaokao. Check out their site here to book a tour or shop for their specialty chocolate product —it will truly sweeten your Cozumel vacation!

6. Visit the Planetarium

A visit to the planetarium is a really unique experience on the island. They are open Tuesday-Saturday and have different activities including children’s workshops, movies on their digit dome, and an experience in the observatory with their gigantic telescope! Check their events on their Facebook page.

7. Explore Chanakanaab National Park

This delightful park is a perfect place to spend a day.  Its beach allows for swimming with dolphins as well as snorkeling and scuba diving.  Its lagoon is famous for its iguana population.  Visitors to the park also enjoy hiking the trails and relaxing in the restaurant and bar.

8. Set a Tee Time

Golfing on Cozumel is a unique experience.  Under the dazzling sunshine, you’ll likely tee off while endemic critters like blue crabs, raccoons, and exotic birds watch you play.  The island’s world-class golf course is majestically situated within mangroves and tropical rainforests.

Renting a vehicle is very easy in Cozumel and can be quite cheap. A scooter can be rented for around $25 a day and other vehicles such as sedans, Jeep wranglers, four-wheelers, dune buggies, etc.. can be rented for $70-90 dollars for 24 hours increments. The island has lots to offer that’s not on the map, so hop in and feel the wind in your hair.

10. Succumb to Pampering

Spas and resorts are part of the Cozumel experience.  If you want to relax and rejuvenate with a massage or beauty treatment, one of the island’s spas is waiting to entice you with delicious aromas and renewing treatments.  Islander Spa is famous for its body wraps while Spa Cozumel will pamper the body as well as the mind and spirit.

Massage Cozumel
