The History & Mystery of Palenque

Palenque was one of the great city-states of the ancient Mayan world and flourished between roughly 600 and 800 AD. Hidden deep within the Chiapas rainforest, the city was eventually abandoned centuries before the arrival of the Spanish.

Today only a small portion of the ancient city has been uncovered, yet Palenque remains one of the most breathtaking archaeological sites in the Americas. The Temple of the Inscriptions — the tomb of the ruler Pakal the Great — is among the most famous Mayan discoveries ever made.

Unlike Chichén Itzá or Tulum, Palenque still feels mysterious and untamed. The ruins rise from dense jungle filled with parrots, butterflies, tropical birds, and howler monkeys whose calls echo across the temples.

Travelers often describe Palenque as spiritual, peaceful, and immersive — a place where history and nature merge together.
