History of Mexico City

From Tenochtitlan to Modern Mexico

Long before Mexico City became the nation’s capital, the Valley of Mexico was home to ancient settlements and powerful civilizations. The Mexicas founded Tenochtitlan on an island in Lake Texcoco, building one of the most important cities in pre-Columbian America.

After the Spanish conquest, colonial Mexico City was built over the ruins of Tenochtitlan. Today, Centro Histórico still reveals this layered history, where the Metropolitan Cathedral, National Palace, Zócalo, and Templo Mayor sit within steps of each other.

Mexico City became the Federal District in 1824 after Mexico’s independence and later evolved into the political, cultural, financial, and educational heart of the country.

Geography & Elevation

Built in the Valley of Mexico

Mexico City sits within the Valley of Mexico inside the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, surrounded by mountains and volcanoes including Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. The city was largely built over the former Lake Texcoco, shaping both its history and modern infrastructure.

Because of its size, elevation, and dense urban layout, visitors should organize activities by neighborhood rather than attempting to cross the city multiple times in one day. Traffic and travel times can vary significantly depending on the zone.

Elevation Approx. 7,350 ft above sea level
Climate Mild spring-like weather year-round
Best Strategy Explore by neighborhood zones

What neighborhoods should first-time visitors explore?

Many first-time visitors focus on Roma Norte, Condesa, Polanco, Centro Histórico, and Coyoacán depending on whether they prefer food, nightlife, museums, luxury hotels, shopping, or historic attractions.

Do I need to understand Hoy No Circula before driving in Mexico City?

Yes. Hoy No Circula is Mexico City’s vehicle restriction program that limits driving on certain days based on plate numbers and emissions categories. Drivers should review the current rules before entering the city with a vehicle.

Is Mexico City walkable?

Many neighborhoods including Roma, Condesa, Polanco, Centro Histórico, and Coyoacán are highly walkable. However, Mexico City is extremely large, so visitors should organize activities by area and expect to use Uber, taxis, or public transportation between zones.
