Geography of Rosarito

Pacific Beaches & Baja Landscapes

Rosarito sits along the Pacific Ocean within the foothills of Baja California’s Peninsular Ranges. The original guide describes Rosarito as having more even terrain than other regional cities, making it popular for off-roading and coastal tourism.

The area is known for beaches, scenic cliffs, surfing, whale watching, sport fishing, horseback riding, and Baja sunsets. Its climate is frequently compared to a Mediterranean climate with mild temperatures throughout much of the year.

History of Rosarito

From Ranchland to Coastal Destination

The Rosarito region was originally inhabited by indigenous peoples long before Spanish explorers arrived on the Baja Peninsula in the 1500s. The original article explains that the area remained difficult to colonize for centuries because of rugged terrain and limited freshwater supplies.

Rosarito’s first ranch was established in 1825, and the community officially formed in 1885. Though it remained tied closely to Tijuana throughout much of the twentieth century, Rosarito eventually became its own municipality in 1995.

Today Rosarito is one of Baja California’s most recognized beach cities, known for tourism, resorts, Baja cuisine, surfing culture, and proximity to Southern California.

The original Rosarito guide highlights surfing as one of the city’s most popular activities, with many visitors enjoying both the waves and the laid-back beach culture surrounding Rosarito’s coastline.
