FMM Tourist Card for Mexico - Did You Know?

The Tourist Card, officially known as the FMM (Forma Migratoria Múltiple), is an essential document for anyone traveling to Mexico for leisure. While it’s often casually referred to as a tourist visa, it’s important to note that the FMM is not an official visa. Instead, it serves as a visitor permit issued by Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM).

This document is primarily for travelers from the United States, Canada, and various other nationalities who are visiting Mexico for vacation, tourism, or other short-term purposes. If you’re planning to explore the beautiful beaches, vibrant culture, or delicious cuisine of Mexico, you’ll need an FMM.

Frequently Asked Questions About the FMM Tourist Card for Mexico

Do I need an FMM Tourist Card in Baja?

All visitors to Mexico, who are not citizens of Mexico, or Permanent or Temporary Residents of Mexico, are required to announce their presence in the Republic of Mexico.  There is no FREE ZONE for FMM Tourist Cards.  The Free Zone applies to vehicles traveling into Mexico, but even if you are traveling in the Free Zone in Mexico you are still required to have a legal documentation to be in Mexico either with citizenship, residency (temporary or permanent) or with the FMM Tourist Card.

The FMM replaced the FM-T tourist permit in 2010, sparking the evolution of Mexican immigration laws. Essentially, all non-immigrants, which refer to those visiting temporarily, must carry a valid tourist card that allows them to stay in Mexico for the stated period. Short-term stays require an FMM, a type of travel visa designed for tourists and other travelers visiting for six months or less.

If you are staying longer than six months, you should consider applying for a non-immigrant visa. An FMM is the permit San Felipe authorities will request when entering Baja or any other situation that requires producing your tourist permit. Here are important FMM San Felipe facts you should note:

  • It is issued by the Mexico Instituto Nacional de Migación (INM) for vacation purposes.
  • It can be obtained from any INM office, online, or at the border. Online documents will require stamping at the border.
  • Valid for land travel throughout Mexico for up to 180 days, which is about six months.

Do not confuse this FMM Tourist Card with a Temporary Vehicle Import Permit (TIP).  Because San Felipe is in the Border Free Zone, you do not need a temporary import permit.

Let us handle your FMM (Tourist Fee) process for a small fee, making your travel seamless and stress-free—no paperwork, no hassles! Send an email today to [email protected] and let the experts take care of it!
